About me, this blog, etc…

So, I needed an about page, so here we go…

Me

I am an old ass programmer and generally an extremely nerdy geek. I grew up in Alaska (Fairbanks and Anchorage), wandered around the forests around wherever I was, trying not to fall off of mountains or get bitten by a moose (Mynd you, møøse bites Kan be pretty nasti…). Survived all that somehow. Did further education multimedia CDs for doctors in Shockwave for a while. Devops, adminy things…

September 18th Veloren update…

Just a quick post outlining some of the changes we got this time.

  • Metal crafting recipes have been merged, so for instance there’s now one steel recipe that covers both armor and weapons.

  • Recipe prices at merchants have been nerfed somewhat. Starter recipes are now 300 coins instead of 500.

  • The fix for mobs fleeing at the slightest hint of trouble has been merged. Mobs want your blood once again.

Emacs can be a mobile music client…

I was screwing around with playlists on my desktop and had meant to see how well things work on my phone… Turns out it works pretty well.

I’m going to assume that if you’re reading this, you probably already know how to install Termux on your phone, and from there install emacs.

Once you’ve got that out of the way, install mpv and either (or both) exiftools or mediainfo. All of which should be installable with pkg install whatever. I was kind of surprised to find mpv available, and it of course doesn’t play video, but it does audio pretty well.

Veloren's latest update (Thursday, September 11th)

I haven’t really ever made a post about an update for Veloren updates, but this one gets us a few nice things, so I thought I’d comment on it and them…

  1. All beds now heal you if you lie in them. That applies to bedrolls and stuff too it seems. Beds can be a handy way to top up health for free in a town without changing your spawn point.

  2. Particle effects like smoke now move with the wind instead of drifting lazily skyward during a hurricane. No real effect but it looks nice.

Using newsboat to keep track of github repo updates…

About five years ago I posted about using the TUI RSS reader newsboat to follow updates to repos on github. Now that I’ve resurrected my blog, I thought I’d repost it.

This also gives me a chance to try out using a mastodon thread as a comment section.

Comments go here.

June 14th, 2020

I was recently looking for a handy way to keep track of updates to Github projects I use, and one that didn’t involve me getting bunches of email. I hit on what I think is a pretty handy way to do it. I already use the terminal RSS client newsboat to do most of my news reading and stuff so why not press it into service monitoring Github projects too?

SoX fun…

I’m planning on reposting some old posts with useful content, so first is…

I saw a nifty trick on Mastodon the other day. Someone pointed out that you can use the SoX library to generate sounds like you get from the bedside sleep aids. I’d forgotten SoX even has synthesizers, but it does. So you can use play -n synth brownnoise synth pinknoise mix synth 0 0 0 10 10 40 trapezium amod 0.1 30 to make ocean surf sounds. It’s super simple, lag free, etc.

A Second Post Appears!

Just a second test post. I thiiiiiink I have this all set to go again, but I expect there to be breakage here and there.

I restarted this blog for a few reasons:

  • I wanted to dabble in POSSE post syndication because I’d like to reduce reliance on any one third party service, like a particular mastodon instance, or even an entire social media platform.

  • I’ve gotten the ‘urge to blog’ bug again and well, here we are…

First Post

This is a thing.

Blah blah fucking blah.

A second thing.
