Gamedev Graphics Resources

Graphics Resources for Gamedev

These are just some graphics resources I’ve run across for gamedev and jams.

Level Design

OGMO - A pretty neat little editor. Fairly flexible. Free. If you use HaxeFlixel, there’s a helper class to load OGMO stuff in Flixel-addons. Just use FlxOgmoLoader.

Tiled - Another tile based map editor. Also pretty nice and free.

DAME - Yet another map editor. Runs with Adobe AIR. Free and quite capable.

General Painting

Photoshop - Everyone knows about this. :)

Krita - A much less well known image editor with a bent towards artistic work rather than technical image editing. Free.

Paint.NET - And another well known editor. Free.

Gimp - And more well known stuff. Free as well.

Sprites

GraphicGale - Comes in free and shareware version, freeware is entirely usable for most purposes though.

GrafX2 - Program specializing in pixel art. Probably good for both sprites and backgrounds if you want a retro look.

Piskel -Simple online sprite editor.

Aseprite - Not free (there is a free trial) but seems pretty comprehensive. It is still open source, and you can compile it yourself fo free if you like.

Pyxel Edit - Not free but pretty decent.

Shoebox - Assorted utilities for working with images with gamedev in mind. The sprite extractor alone is worth having to install Adobe Air.

Fonts

Littera - Handy online tool for converting fonts over to bitmaps for use. (Pack method 6 seems to be the best).

DaFont - Font site. Has a custom preview though, so you could easily use this to make simple text bitmaps for static text.

1001 Free Fonts - Lots of free fonts.

Game Assets

Open Game Art - A fair bit of free game assets. They also hold game jams and such.

GameAssets subReddit - Quite a bit of everything.

Kenny - Lots and lots of free stuff. Most free for commercial use too.

Open Game Graphics - More free assets.

Lost Garden - Assorted bits of nice artwork.

Itch.io Free Game Assets - A huge pile of free game assets.

3D Stuff

MagicaVoxel - A really nifty 3d voxel painting program. It has a really nice interface, and rendering options for rendering right in Magicavoxel. You can also export in a variety of formatd for importing into game engines or editors.

Blender - The gold standard for free 3D editors and rendering engines.
